Tidal Dynamics in the Sand Motor Lagoon

چکیده
The Sand Motor is a mega-nourishment characterized by a very large sand volume of around 20 million m placed along the Dutch coast. The Sand Motor is a pilot project to evaluate the performance of an alternative nourishment strategy with respect to different functions of the coastal system. Within the scope of the coastal functions, the hook-shaped design of the initial morphology of the Sand Motor involves a sheltered (man-made) lagoon. The morphology of the Sand Motor and particularly the area around the lagoon entrance has changed over time since the construction in 2011. As a result of the changing inlet and lagoon morphology, the tidal conditions inside the basin have changed. We have set up a detailed numerical model to simulate the hydrodynamic conditions inside the Sand Motor’s tidal lagoon as a function of the water level at sea and the measured local morphology of the Sand Motor. It is found that the tidal response inside the lagoon changes significantly as a function of the changing morphology. The analysis reveals a prediction of the temporal development of the tidal range and mean water level inside the lagoon, which can be used to predict the closure of the Sand Motor lagoon.

Origin Of Calcareous Sediments in the Holocene Pigeon Creek Tidal Lagoon and Tidal Delta, San Salvador Island, Bahamas
A sedimentological survey of the southwest arm of the Holocene Pigeon Creek tidal lagoon on San Salvador Island, Bahamas was conducted to determine the origin and distribution of calcareous sediments. Transect surveys, surface samples, and sediment cores were collected and examined to determine the abundance and distribution of sediments and sediment producers in the lagoon and associated tidal...
متن کاملHistorical changes of bottom topography and tidal amplitude in the Ria de Aveiro, Portugal—trends for future evolution
The natural evolution of the estuary-coastal lagoon system of the Ria de Aveiro, Portugal, was halted in 1808 by the construction of a new inlet/outlet channel through the sand spit which isolates it from the Atlantic Ocean. In consequence, tidal amplitudes in the lagoon increased from 0.07–0.13 m to over 1 m. Improvements to the channel since 1936, including construction of jetties, breakwater...
متن کاملMigration of Tidal Inlets of Chilika Lagoon, Odisha, India -A Critical Study
Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon situated on the East coast of India is separated from Bay of Bengal by sand bars and connected with the sea by a series of tidal inlets. The inlets are maintained by discharges of inflowing streams during monsoon and by tides and ebb tides during non-monsoon. Imbalance in ingress and egress of sediment due to their continuous exchange between s...
متن کاملWind waves in shallow microtidal basins and the dynamic equilibrium of tidal flats
[1] Shallow microtidal basins are characterized by extensive areas of tidal flats that lie within specific ranges of elevation. These landforms are inherently flat and their evolution strongly depends on the balance between sedimentary and erosive processes. Here we present a stochastic point model for tidal flat evolution to study the influence of tidal currents and wind waves on tidal flat eq...
متن کاملScale-dependent effects of habitat on movements and path structure of reef sharks at a predator-dominated atoll.
The effects of habitat on the ecology, movements, and foraging strategies of marine apex predators are largely unknown. We used acoustic telemetry to quantify the movement patterns of blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus) at Palmyra Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, in the Pacific Ocean. Sharks had relatively small home ranges over a timescale of days to weeks (0.55 +/- 0.24 km2) and s...
